NEWS OF THE WEEK
Geoff spoke of the Australian Literary Review (ALR) which he passed around the group. The ALR is included free MONTHLY, within 'The Australian', each FIRST Wednesday of the month.
Leonie. Her house is in the process of being built. Today there were 8 workmen there ready to work, she said this as if it was a miracle.
Terry. His daughter has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and as yet the family don't know how serious it is. We all offered our support and prayers for him, it is a worrying time for his family. May God keep you all.
Jo. She has got her car fixed it is known as the bomb and is now registered and it is going okay.
David R. Went Whale watching on the extreme whale watching and thoroughly enjoyed it. He got really close to three whales. It cost him $52 and lasted two and a half hours. Good value for money he said.
Di. Missed us all very much as she has been away and missed not writing as she has been so busy. Her partner has moved down from Kangaroo Valley and is now living with her. She is in a state of Bliss.
Wendy. Nothing she can think of. Every day is wonderful.
Mandy. Proudly boasted about her grandson and is going to see him as he is having an engagement party. Grandchildren are just as wonderful as children once they grow up.
Helene. New induction cook top has now taken up residence in her kitchen and she says it is wonderful. Her family will expect sumptuous meals now.
Cheryl New to the group this week and has only lived in the area for a month and is enjoying some me time. She wants to be involved with things and loves writing inspirational and spiritual things to uplift people..
WORD OF THE DAY
Helene. Besotted. Adj and means infatuated or stupefied, the mind.The mind can become besotted with drink. Second word. Bliss means perfect happiness.
Mandy told us about an expression To Sit on Ones Hands. Taking no action not applauding. Another expression. Kitchen Sink Drama. A play about ordinary people their lives and dramas.
Wendy. Absquatulate To leave in a hurry. Second word. Ego Surfing. Looking on the net for details about yourself.
Di. Mucilaginous. Slimy and ropey.
David R. Trenchant. Adj meaning vigorous or incisive. From and old French word meaning cutting. In poetry terms it can mean a sharp tool. Has several meanings.
Jo. Go on sweetheart. used as a caption on tv and it came out Go ensuite hurt. Her other word was Lush. Often used by Americans to describe someone who drinks.
Grogram A cloak. It became a term used for alcohol Grog as the man who served the drink wore a Grogram Cloak.
Terry. Miss spelling of the word enclosed on a school they used inclose. Fractious hard to manage or unruly.
Leonie. Extirpate meaning to destroy and annihilate means to destroy completely.
Geoff. Salience Something that stands out from the things around it. and last but not least. Benignity mellow harmless not life threatening.
HOMEWORK STORIES READ OUT
Leonie. The Topic was Dinner Time. A really good description of dinner time in a nursing home. It was very well written and brought it all very clearly to ones mind.
Geoff. Dinner time. The perfect meal portrayed in a family and how it was depicted in the fifties.
Cheryl. My Favourite Sunset. A lovely piece about the ending of the day.
Helene. The House of Love. A poem. Taken from the houses perspective.
Mandy. Dinner Time about dinner time in a Concentration Camp.
Wendy. Eating. A poem about how much she hates dinner time.
Di. The House on the Hill. A visit to a loved Uncle with explicit descriptions. of times gone by.
David R. The House on the hill. A poem.about wrecking kids and ex wives.
Jo. A House on the Hill. The story of the love for a tree beside the house.
Terry. A six words story. Several examples of stories reduced to six words.
Exercises
We all had a go at doing a six word story. Some good ideas. Much laughter as we guessed which poem story or film the six words described. We then played letters making as long a word as possible from vowels and continuants pulled out of a bag. Wendy won this game.
Geoff read us an exert from the novel he is writing. It is coming along nicely. His descriptions are not only mind pictures you can even smell the scene.
Homework
Write about the adventures of Middle Aged Man in Lycra (MAMIL).
We hope Cheryl enjoyed our company and we certainly enjoyed hers, she fitted in very well so we hope to see her next week
